Report: GM To Axe Cadillac XLR This SpringLet's face it: The Cadillac XLR has been anything but a sales success, performance benchmark, or luxury standard. As a result of its lackluster sales due to stiff competition and high pricing, reports say parent company General Motors has officially pulled the plug on the XLR. Beginning this spring, around 40 workers at the company's Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky will be affected by the model's demise (there was no word on if they will be reassigned or laid off).
In addition to XLR production, the small staff handles Chevrolet Corvette assembly (the XLR, of course, being based on 'Vette architecture). The plant is currently closed until February 23 as part of GM's nationwide production suspensions. According to the Automotive News Data Center, Cadillac sold just 1,250 XLR's in 2008 -- or 500 less than the year prior.
Corvette production is expected to not be affected during the XLR's phase-out.
