For the 1968 auto show circuit, Cadillac's stylists created a distinctive show car based on a 1968 Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado. The Eldorado Biarritz Towne Coupe was reminiscent of the elegant 1930s open-front town cars that featured a roof over the rear passenger compartment only, with the area over the front seat open.

The Eldorado Biarritz Towne Coupe utilized a stock 1968 Eldorado, which was modified to remove the roof section from the windshield back to the area where the rear quarter windows normally began. The roof was extended forward to cover the area normally occupied by the quarter windows, giving the car a blind rear quarter roof section. This rear roof section was covered in a black padded and textured vinyl that gave it a very elegant appearance. Since this car was never intended for street use, no provision was made for any type of removable front roof panel, which meant there was no weather protection for the interior.

The exterior of the Eldorado show car was finished with 20 coats of a mixture of Baroque Gold (1968 Cadillac paint code 46) and Monterey Green Firemist acrylic enamel paint (paint code 96), to which additional gold metallic flakes had been added to give the car a shimmery, metallic look that had a higher reflectivity value than even the Firemist paints, which were an extra cost option on all Cadillacs. Cadillac called the specially-mixed color "Olive Firefrost." The front end featured a unique grille with a fine vertical texture, as well as frosted parking light lenses in the leading edges of the front fenders. This car also previewed what would be the new full wheel cover for the 1969 Eldorado, which eliminated the sporty slotted design of 1967-68 for one with fine vanes instead. Dual thin-stripe whitewall tires completed the exterior modifications.

Inside, the Eldorado was trimmed with antique gold velour on the seats with contrasting horizontal leather straps on the seat backs and an embroidered emblem on the front armrest. Mouton carpeting ran wall to wall on the floor, and overhead, more antique gold velour for the headlining and roof quarter panels. Carved antique walnut accents appeared throughout the passenger compartment, and featured round chrome ornaments on the door panels. In the rear compartment, assist straps were provided on each roof quarter panel for the convenience of those fortunate enough to need assistance entering or exiting this one of a kind creation.

The inspiration for the car came from the mythical locale of El Dorado (Spanish for "the golden one"), which according to legend was the "City of Gold," sought by the Spanish Conquistadors. It is said that a South American Tribal Chief covered himself with gold dust, then dove into a mountain lake of crystal clear pure water, turning the lake into gold.
